Growing cauliflowers with PoshCloche Garden Cloches

Cauliflowers can be harvested virtually all year round when using cloches to promote growth and protect from the weather.  

There are many varieties suitable for each of the main growing seasons and all have their own specific sowing and growing conditions aided by cloches.

Growing methods.

Cauliflowers dislike any check to their growth so take extra care when transplanting young seedlings and plants. A constant temperature of 10-16 degrees C(50-60 degrees F) is required to promote germination so consider the soil temperature and use cloches in the cooler months. If you have raised seedlings indoors then plant out under your cloche to gradually harden off. If sowing outdoors you can sow in rows directly in their final growing position and thin out to the strongest plants or sow in a block ready to transplant to their final growing position when the plants are big enough. Protect plants and seedlings during the winter months with your cloches. Gardeners growing in Northern climates and harsh conditions can use cloches on winter cauliflowers to get them through the winter.

Broadly speaking, cauliflowers grown over the winter months for spring and summer use tend to grow slowly, are smaller and put on less leaf growth. Less feeding is required for winter grown cauliflowers where as the spring and summer grown cauliflowers are gross feeders putting on lots of growth and leaf and with a bit of luck producing larger curds.
