How well do AcryliCloche® garden cloches perfom in very cold frosty weather and how quickly do AcryliCloche® cloches warm the soil?
Protecting tender garden plants and vegetables from damaging frost and winter weather is crucial if they are to survive. Even hardy plants and winter vegetables will suffer and wilt under prolonged periods of cold frost making it difficult to grow certain crops and plants in some regions.
During December 2009 we tested AcryliCloche® garden cloches to see just how effective they are at protecting the plants and providing warmth during one of the coldest months in the growing year.
The results are in and we are impressed at how well AcryliCloche® have performed.
How well do AcryliCloche® garden cloches protect from frost? Very cold weather results.
Prolonged frosts and frozen ground were no problem for AcryliCloche® Garden Cloches. It was on average 2.7 ºC warmer
under the cloche.

Soil warming under AcryliCloche® garden cloches, how long does it really take?
Conventional wisdom has it that we should warm the soil with cloches for at least two weeks before sowing. Our trial showed it took just a few hours to warm the soil up using AcryliCloche® cloches.

Trial details.
Throughout December 2009 we tested AcryliCloche® garden cloches and recorded soil surface temperatures and soil temperatures 5cm deep. We tested temperatures on AcryliCloche® cloches that had been in situ for many weeks and AcryliCloche® cloches that were newly placed for the trial.Temperatures were recorded using digital thermometers called Thermicrons.
The weather conditions were variable throughout the month starting with sunny days which changed to heavy rainfall and then prolonged periods
of frost.
AcryliCloche® Tent Style cloches were used for the trial with end pieces in place.
Day time temperatures were recorded between the hours of 6am to 5pm and Night time temperatures recorded between the hours of 5pm to 6am.
